When both parents work, it can be difficult to find emergency or back-up child care.
If the child is ill, s/he may not be allowed to return to day care/school until s/he has been symptom-free for 24 hours,
which means parents may need emergency care for multiple days. This is one reason why many families choose a nanny over day care.
Some suggestions:
- Keep a reserve of sick leave or PTO days, just in case.
- Alternate days home with your spouse, or do half days (e.g., mother home in the morning, father home in the afternoon).
- Work from home, if possible.
- Ask nearby family members for help, if possible.
- Call a nanny agency that can provide on-call nannies:
